Bounces
In the end, “bounces” are what determined the winner of last night’s game. Bounces. Please don’t misunderstand the meaning of this word. I am not trying to say that we won because we were lucky. And lucky we were – but finally, we got the bounces! In the pursuit of any goal or objective, I am a big believer that we determine our own fates. Typically, when a ball bounces on a flat surface, it could go in any direction. When you tilt that surface to the right for instance, the laws of gravity tell us that the ball will bounce to the right. The Canadiens, with the Carolina game as an exception, have tilted the surface in their direction all season long. And all season long, we have heard the sound of pucks off posts, off the goalie’s skate blade, and even off the end of the end of the stick. And for every 10 amazing, unfortunate missed chances that the Habs had, we made only 1 little error – ONE error that seemed to cost us every game. All season long, the laws of gravity were being defied.Last night, the Canadiens played a great game – consistent with the games that we have played so far this year. But last night, the bounces went our way. The goals were not pretty, seemingly lucky actually, but they were deserved. Not one Buffalo player commented on the “luck” that the Habs seemed to have last night. That’s because they knew that all our goals were pure circumstance of tough, gritty, dominating play. On the player side, you have to give lots of credit to three guys: Roman Hamrlik, Tom Kostopoulos, Guillaume Latendresse.Roman HamrlikFor all who are still trying to compare our new #44 with the old #44; last night gave you the perfect point of comparison. We NEED a player who is able to play sound defensive hockey, a GO TO man in the last period. Last night gave you a sparkling indication of why Roman Hamrlik is going to be great for the Habs. We are a team whose strategy is defensive. And finally, we have remained in line with that strategy by acquiring a defensive player. His goals were not pretty, but they were all created by tremendous chances that initiated. With defensive confidence comes offensive performance for this team. And that’s why Roman Hamrlik is going to be a major asset for the Habs over the next several seasons. Just ask Calgary fans how they felt when they let him go…Tom KostopoulosYou know, Tom Koutopoulos did not have a huge night on the score sheet - but that’s not the point. This is a guy who explicitly took the blame for the loss against the Senators. This is a guy who is a defensive specialist, and made a defensive blunder on Thursday night. But after being knocked off that horse, he came back last night and played his BEST game as a Hab. His penalty killing was great. His defensive zone coverage was great. If he continues to play like he did last night, he will start being recognized as one of the best 4th line players in the league. Tom taught us a lesson in courage and determination last night, one that most of us would not have been able to match after being scapegoat two nights earlier. All my respect goes to this guyGuillaume LatendresseThis is a follow up to the Kostopoulos point. Here is another player who has been pinned to the ground all season long by the media and fans alike. But for the second night in a row, you noticed this guy on the ice for every shift. Even Kovalev seemed fired up by his strong forechecking. This line created a lot of chances by fighting for the puck in the corners. Out of the 3 players on the line, Latendresse fought in the corners about 80% of the time, stealing the puck over 50% of the time. Stats don’t lie. If you keep up this effort and resolve, the results will come fast and furiousAside from these 3, honourable mentions go out to Dandenault (for continued perseverance), Higgins (finally scoring), Huet (good goaltending), and Koivu (playing with an awful cold).Collectively, our boys rose up against one of the strongest team in the NHL and showed them why the Habs will be a force to be reckoned with. As soon as that ball consistently starts bouncing our way, teams won’t know what hit them. All we have to do is continue slanting that surface the way we have been and the results will surely come. Its gonna be a great year folks – get pumped, these Habs cause some serious surprises!
